Above all, our thanks go to the keynote speakers who stood out for their quality, and their numbers: Léo Apotheker, former CEO of SAP and HP; Carsten Schloter, CEO Swisscom; Ben Verwaayen, CEO Alcatel-Lucent; Pascal Cagni, former SVP Apple Europe; Stéphane Roussel, President and CEO of SFR; Kelly Merryman, VPC Netflix; Jean-Ludovic Silicani, President ARCEP; Stéphane Richard, President and CEO of Orange; Hans Vestberg, CEO Ericsson and others. We also acknowledge the video messages of our members, including John Chambers of Cisco and Paul Jacobs of Qualcomm.

If there is one message to come out of the event, at least partly in caricature, it is this: there is a broad agreement on the leading role of the three game changers of the digital ecosystems: mobility, cloud and big data. But, in response to the American tune that the digital market will gain from this change, the European antiphony, sung by a choir of TV companies and telcos, was all about the need to rejig the value chain.

Yet it is clear from the speeches made in Montpellier that these same European telcos and TV companies recognise the danger of a dangerous spiral leading them to cut down their investment in their most crucial of resources: their networks and their programmes.

In fact, many of their representatives emphasised that to continually seek a stand-off between new OTT services and the traditional players does not take into account the undeniable dynamism which these new actors are bringing to the market.

It is, finally, up to the operators to differentiate themselves in how they deploy and manage their networks. They need to find the winning formula (“tiered pricing”) for marketing and segmenting their access packages. They should, also, be promoting OTT services and proposing other offerings to their subscribers than a formatted bouquet of IPTV. This course of action would, further, serve to save the ailing network equipment industry in Europe.

And it is up to the television companies to see their metamorphosis through to the end, and to no longer reason in terms of being a mere TV channel but, instead, a multi-platform distributor of their brands and their programmes.”
